Leg Pain

Many conditions can cause leg pain. These tips include information about different conditions that cause leg pain including sciatica, ACL tears, and nerve problems, along with information about symptoms, risk factors, and treatments for leg pain.

Sometimes fluid can build up in the veins in your legs if you sit or stand still for a long time. This buildup (called venous congestion) can cause leg pain and swelling. Leg pain symptoms associated with venous congestion are achy feelings after extended sitting or standing. Anyone can develop venous congestion, but it is more likely in people who are overweight or in poor physical condition. Also, suddenly changing from wearing low heeled shoes to high heels may trigger venous congestion.

If you regularly experience leg pain after sitting or standing, see a specialist to rule out a serious medical problem. Treatment of venous congestion may include:

  • Wearing compression hosiery
  • Getting more exercise
  • Elevating your feet above your heart for at least 15 minutes when the pain occurs. Try lying on a towel on the floor with your feet up against a wall for support.
