Tailbone Pain: When Sitting Isn’t Pretty

Tailbone Pain: When Sitting Isn’t Pretty

Tailbone pain caused by inflammation of the tailbone (coccyx) is known as coccydynia. In particular, coccydynia pain is pain in the tailbone area at the tip of the tailbone between the buttocks.

Coccydynia may seem to occur for no reason, but it is often the result of injury. Coccydynia pain may get worse with extended periods of sitting.

Coccydynia is often a diagnosis of exclusion, which means that a clinician may make the diagnosis after ruling out other causes of tailbone pain, such as bone or tissue disorders.

The prescription for recovery may include:

  • Using a well-padded seat
  • Standing up often when sitting for long periods
  • Taking anti-inflammatory medications
  • Getting a cortisone shot

In extreme cases, a specialist can remove the irritated tip of the coccyx. Because other conditions such as sciatica or a tailbone fracture can cause pain in the tailbone area, see a specialist to have your tailbone pain evaluated.
