Penis Pain May Be Peyronie’s Disease
How? In Peyronie’s disease, scar tissue forms under the skin of the penis that causes it to curve to one side during an erection.
Peyronie’s disease is relatively rare, and the condition occurs most often in men between the ages of 45 and 60. Researchers believe that genetic abnormalities may play a role, but the exact cause is unknown. Other possible causes include a traumatic injury to the penis, an autoimmune disorder, and certain types of medications called beta blockers.
The following symptoms of Peyronie’s disease may appear gradually or quickly:
- Curved penis during erection
- Penis pain during erection
- Shortening or shrinking of the penis
- Hard, fibrous tissue on one or more sides of the penis
- Erectile dysfunction
See a specialist if your penis pain is accompanied by a curved penis. He or she can recommend oral medications, injections to break up the scar tissue, or surgery if necessary.
