Taming Your Tooth Pain
Tooth pain can be an early sign of tooth decay. If you notice consistent pain in a tooth that lasts for more than a day or two, see your dentist; you may need some dental work.
But a toothache that goes beyond mild pain and becomes a severe, throbbing pain could be an early sign of a tooth abscess. A tooth abscess is a pus-filled lesion at the roots of a tooth or in the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth.
Other symptoms of a tooth abscess include:
- Sensitivity to chewing and biting and to heat and cold
- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes in the jaw or neck
- Additional swelling in the face
The best way to prevent tooth decay and tooth pain is to follow a regular routine of good dental hygiene. But tune in to tooth pain; if decay progresses to an abscess that goes untreated, it can cause a serious infection.
