Think Pink If You Have Eye Pain
Pinkeye, also known as conjunctivitis, is one of the common causes of eye pain. Pinkeye is inflammation and redness of the membrane that covers the inner eyelid and the white part of the eye (the conjunctiva).
Pinkeye can be caused by viruses, bacteria, allergic reactions, toxins, or other types of diseases in the body. Pinkeye caused by viruses or bacteria are common in children, although adults can get pinkeye, too (and sometimes they get it from their kids).
Symptoms of pinkeye include:
- Swollen eyelid
- Discharge from the eye
- Eye pain
- Blurry vision
- Scratchiness, burning, or itching in the eye
- Sensitivity to light
Because viral and bacterial pinkeye are highly contagious, it’s important to see a clinician for antibiotics if the cause is bacterial. Medication won’t help a viral infection, but for any case of pinkeye, frequent handwashing and disinfecting household surfaces can help keep the infection at bay until it resolves (usually about a week or so).
