Treatment for Twisted Testicles

Treatment for Twisted Testicles

Testicular torsion occurs when a testicle rotates in a way that cuts off the blood flow to the testicle, which can cause severe testicle pain. This condition requires emergency care within a few hours in order to save the testicle.

Symptoms include:

  • Being young. Testicular torsion is most common in men younger than 25 years, although it can occur in older adults, children, and infants.
  • Severe pain in one testicle, even pain that goes away (sometime the testicle untwists on its own)
  • Swelling of the scrotum
  • Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Odd position of one testicle compared with the other.

Research has shown that men who develop testicular torsion have a genetic trait that lets the testicle rotate inside the scrotum. Even if the testicle untwists on its own, surgery is needed to prevent the torsion from recurring.
