Breast pain is a common symptom in women and it has many causes. For many women, breast pain can be a routine part of the menstrual cycle.
Breast pain that is likely associated with the menstrual cycle is characterized by:
- Dull, achy pain
- Pain accompanied by tenderness and swelling
- Pain in both breasts
- Pain that gets worse during the two weeks before your period.
Other possible causes of breast pain include:
- Extramammary breast pain: Pain you feel in your breast or breasts when you have an injury elsewhere, such as a strained muscle in your chest.
- Medications: Certain medications, including fertility treatments, can cause breast pain.
- Large breasts: Very large breasts can become painful, especially during exercise if they aren’t well supported.
Keep in mind that breast pain alone is rarely a sign of breast cancer, but it may indicate cancer or another medical problem if the pain is tight and burning, constant or intermittent, and affects only one breast.
