Back Attacks: Causes Of Back Pain

Back Attacks: Causes Of Back Pain

According to the Mayo Clinic, four out of five adults in the United States will suffer from low back pain at least once in their lives. That’s a big backache!

You can manage most back pain and prevent it from recurring if you know some of the causes. The three general categories of back pain include:

  1. Sprains and strains: Overuse of the muscles and ligaments in the back either suddenly, or over time, can cause back pain.
  2. Structural problems: Problems with the bones and joints of the spine including arthritis and osteoporosis can cause back pain. And when structural problems of the spine create pressure on the sciatic nerve in the low back, the result can be back pain and / or leg pain.
  3. Uncommon medical conditions: Some rare causes of back pain include a tumor or infection of the spine.

Although anyone can develop back pain, any of the following factors can increase your risk:

  • Physically demanding work, sedentary work, or stressful work
  • Stress, anxiety, or depression
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Older age
  • Being female
