Chest Pain Can Signal Lung Problems

Chest Pain Can Signal Lung Problems

Many people assume that any chest pain is cardiac related or that they are having a heart attack. In fact, there are many other causes of chest pain.

Pulmonary embolism is a lung condition with chest pain that feels like a heart attack. It occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lungs.

Symptoms of a pulmonary embolism include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Pain in the chest that may spread to the arm, shoulder, neck or jaw
  • Coughing up blood

Other symptoms may include swelling of the legs, weakness, dizziness, sweating, and fever. Although a pulmonary embolism is not a heart attack and is rarely fatal, it’s important to seek expert help immediately to treat the blood clot and to identify any additional clots. In serious cases, other types of medications may be needed, or your clinician may perform a surgical procedure involving a vein filter to keep other clots from reaching the pulmonary artery.
