Don’t Let Shin Splints Slow You Down
Shin splints occur due to overload on the tibia and the tendons and ligaments that attach the shin muscle to the shinbone. Some factors that can cause this overload include frequent running downhill, running on a slanted surface, running on worn-out or poorly-fitted shoes, and playing sports that involve frequent starts and stops, such as tennis.
Shin splints are common in runners and other athletes, and usually the pain can be managed by applying ice to the sore spot after activity, taking a few rest days, and making sure that you are wearing proper shoes that are right for your feet and have enough cushioning for pavement-pounding runs.
But if your lower leg pain persists, see a specialist for an evaluation to rule out a more serious problem. Use our free clinician finder to locate a specialist in your area.
