Thumbs Up: Pinpoint Thumb Tendon Pain
A condition called de Quervain’s syndrome is one possible cause of hand and wrist pain. It occurs when the sheath of the tendons that run along the outside of the thumb becomes inflamed, usually as a result of overuse. Actions including knitting, peeling vegetables, or playing the piano can all cause this condition.
Some key symptoms of de Quervain’s syndrome include:
- Pain and swelling near the base of the thumb
- Numbness along the back of the thumb and index finger
- A squeaking sensation as the tendons try to squeeze through the inflamed area
- Stiffness in the thumb and wrist during grasping or pinching movements
Also, an injury to the area or the presence of rheumatoid arthritis can cause de Quervain’s syndrome. If rest and ice don’t ease the pain, consult a specialist, who might recommend a splint or brace to force the injured tendons to rest.
