Track Your Stomach Troubles

Nearly everyone has experienced nausea and vomiting when they are sick. That’s your stomach’s way of dealing with irritants or invading organisms. Sometimes nausea and vomiting are symptoms of another illness and sometimes they are the products of specific causes, such as that bad batch of salsa you ate at happy hour (food poisoning).

Other conditions that can cause nausea and vomiting include:

  • Migraines
  • Pregnancy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Viral infections
  • Bulimia
Nausea and vomiting are especially common in infants and children. Babies spit up all the time, but sometimes they have severe vomiting. Some causes of severe vomiting in infants younger than 6 months include:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): When food backs up from the stomach into the esophagus.
  • The wrong size hole in the bottle nipple, which could cause the baby to get too much liquid at once.
  • Infection (if the vomiting comes with a runny nose and fever).
